Berklee. Banded. Brighton.

BANDEDI once met a poet who kept a drawer full of discarded lines. She would, when she was stuck on a new idea, reach in the drawer and grab an old idea, convinced that her discarded dead ends weren’t dead ends at all, but simply hadn’t yet discovered their destinations. She could only write in the morning. Some poets write all the time.

I know an architect who paints unstructured color fields for pleasure at night in order to shed the rigidity of his business during the day. He lies on his belly when he paints. Some painters use an easel.

A famous photographer would study his subject from all angles, crouching around it for tens of minutes or more in an attempt to understand the thing as fully as he could before finding the perfect view from which to capture it. Then he would capture it. But just once. Some photographers will shoot and shoot and shoot.

The creative process has always been an interesting topic for me, often more so than the actual creations that result. That we do similar things in dissimilar ways is an obvious thought as trite as cat-skinning and folks’ strokes. Nevertheless, every time I meet an artist I want to know how she does it, so I can drop new ideas in my drawers, waiting for the next time I’m stuck.

So thanks to Berklee PULSE for having us be a part of this. Can’t wait.

deep heaven now four

You may be aware that we’re going to be a part of Deep Heaven Now 4,  and we’re curious who you’re looking forward to catching this weekend. There are some obvious choices, like December Sound and Endless Wave and Major Stars and The Vandelles and Static of the Gods, but you’ve also got some stellar and potentially less obvious choices like The New Highway Hymnal and Sand Reckoner and our very own SUNRAM. You know what? Nevermind. Just see all the bands on both days and that’ll be that.

In the meantime, below are some videos to give you a taste of what we’ll be bringing South and West…

20 in 2010

Hey Readers, Nazli here.  (My name is pronounced Nazla for anyone wondering).  It’s getting dang near to the end of 2010, which means that most every publication out there is making their ‘year end’ list.  I’m one of those people that likes to make lists too.  Grocery lists, to do lists, birthday lists…anything to keep everything in check and on paper.  For me, it’s not one of those, checkin it twice kinda deals, it’s more like a sanity check.  So it shouldn’t be surprising to you that I’ve made a list of every show that Ghost Box Orchestra has ever played.  Well almost.  Things got a little hazy right after we recorded the album.  Regardless, I just crunched the numbers and in 2010, Ghost Box Orchestra played about 20 shows.  Twenty shows! Basements!  Portuguese American Clubs! Towns with witch trials!  On the radio! It’s been a blast and we can’t wait to bring you more.

Your support is boundlessly appreciated!  We thank you for coming out to our shows, buying our album, listening to our record, and talking about our music.

Two more shows and then we are tying the knot to seal up the vault of 2010.

december sounds

December is nearly here and who better to spend time with as the holidays roll in than with friends of yours? We’ll be at The Elevens in Northampton with Friends of Yours on the 4th and at the Rosebud Bar in Somerville with Friends of Yours on the 9th.

UPDATE: The show on Decmeber 4th in Northampton also features TRUCKS and MERCHANT BANKERS, along with us and Friends of Yours. The December 9th show is new and improved, now with more GONDOLIERS!

If you can’t wait that long go get yourself a special glimpse into Ghost Box Orchestra’s creative process (and occasionally colossal time wasting techniques) by visiting our soundcloud page for never before heard jam session brainstorms.

wowsers! deep heaven now two!

We are stoked to have been invited to rock the Deep Heaven Now Two ambient/shoegaze/psych fest!

In case you don’t already know, this is a two day event spread over two clubs in Somerville, Massachusetts, featuring 25 or so bands doing their things. It’s sponsored by Flyweight, one of the best shows on wzbc, one of the best radio stations in our neck of the woods.

In case you’re thinking to yourself “Wow! 25 bands! 2 nights! That’s so overwhelming. I don’t even know where to begin…” well, you should begin by getting yourself a compact disc featuring songs by the bands who will be performing.
